Operational Risk Reduction through Strategic Communication
When things go sideways...
You run a business or agency.
You don’t have a large C‑suite, a PR team, or a $600/hr lawyer on speed‑dial.
You do have:
A riot in the comment section.
A high-takes negotiation you're getting snowplowed on.
The TV news station calling with a deadline.
A big conversation or negotiation you need to prepare for.
You don’t want to make it worse.
You don’t want to sit on your hands and watch it burn.
That’s where we come in.
What we do.

Crisis & Reputation
Crisis communication when something ugly is brewing or already public
“The news is here” on-camera interview prep and narrative control
Fixing runaway social media or community‑rumor problems

Negotiation & Conflict
Navigating workplace and partnership blowups
Coaching on hard conversations and assertiveness
Strategy and language for negotiations that don’t (yet) need a lawyer

Video Production & Messaging
Crafting firm, clear written responses
Tactically pursue the right kind of good press
In-house writing, shooting, and editing internal/external video messages
One goal: protect your reputation and your money without losing your voice.

In-House "Newsroom" Setup
Build your own "newsroom" within your business or agency to take control over messaging and brand/reputation management
Learn on-camera voice control, inflection and body language
Train up your PIO or Comms team with essential video shooting, editing and writing skills
Replace "old school" press releases with high engagement content that makes you the source of information
Rapid Response Consulting: TalkBack Sessions

Why First Response
I’m Casey Roman. I spent years as an Edward R. Murrow award-winning investigative reporter in television news watching people torch their reputations in front of a camera.
I later built a second career training law enforcement agencies, government organizations, and contractors on how to handle the moment when a camera shows up and the stakes are suddenly public. My work has included projects connected with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Forest Service, police departments, and national organizations such as the American Cancer Society.
I’ve also worked as a video producer supporting government contractors, public safety agencies, and national organizations such as the American Cancer Society. Earlier in my career I served as Broker in Charge of a residential and commercial real estate brokerage.
I know how fast a bad moment can become a headline, a viral clip, or the reason good people walk out the door.
I’m not a PR firm. I’m not your lawyer. I’m the person you call when you want the sugar-free truth, a battle plan, and language that actually sounds like you.
When you need to handle something difficult without burning your whole life or business down, First Response should be your first call.

"I'm the front line for the self‑employed, small to mid‑size businesses, and first‑responder agencies to keep problems from turning into headlines, lawsuits, or viral dogpiles,"
-Casey Roman, President
Field Notes.
An influencer dragging your business sends you sprinting into the comments to start swinging. That’s exactly how you turn one angry post into a full‑blown brand reputation crisis.
Digital combat does three things: feeds the algorithm (replies = reach), makes you look defensive and petty, invites every bored idiot in to take a swing. Instead of slap‑fighting under their video, we craft a calm, public crisis communication response that lives on your own channels, plus one direct, professional outreach to the creator if it’s worth it - because screenshots are forever.
If the news calls and your response is “no comment,” you just told the audience you do have something to hide. “No comment” sounds guilty, terrified, or arrogant—pick your poison. Reporters don’t hear “we’re being careful,” they hear “there’s a story here, hype the drama.”
In a crisis, you need controlled comment, not no comment. One clear, calm sentence can buy you time, calm things down, and keep your lawyer from passing out: My job is to help you walk that line—say enough to look honest and competent, without handing the internet a false confession on a platter.
De-Influence.
"No Comment" is not a strategy.

Casey Roman is a truly gifted communicator, with a no-nonsense yet affable approach to extracting details, discerning nuance, and crafting a narrative that is both accurate and reflective of current events and urgent, dire, and every day circumstances. I worked closely with Casey during my tenure as the Deputy Assistant Chief Information Officer of the US Forest Service, where she drew upon her storied career in journalism to develop a communications strategy that showcased and positioned the Chief Information Office as a tactical, operational, and strategic partner critical to the execution of the vast mission of the US Forest Service, the results of which influenced the honor of the CIOs receiving it's first ever Chief's Honor Award for "Delivering the Wildfire Crisis Strategy Through Innovation." Casey is quick to assimilate information, cut through conflict, and devise and deliver information in a clear and concise manner, which is exactly what crisis communications calls for - the right information at the right time to inform and enhance decision making.

Casey Roman is a professional who has delivered to her audience the timely, thought-provoking, and sometimes ugly side of issues that plague our communities. She has done so with an energy, thoroughness, wit and sense of humor, and an artistic style that I have never before seen. Casey has proven herself to be fearless, articulate, humorous, and artistic. She is truly concerned about and seeks to improve the human condition of those who live in our community.
As someone who has been on both sides of the microphone, I can tell you without question that this experience will benefit any professional who works with the press. You'll learn essential tools you need to succeed along with the tricks of the trade. After your training sessions, you'll find yourself able to walk into any interview with difference-making levels of skill and confidence.

Who we've supported.
I ran for Sheriff of Pender County NC and asked Casey to assist my campaign with messaging. Casey helped coach, critique, and offered constructive criticism on how to make all aspects of my campaign better using media. Casey has also assisted our town with several sensitive matters. She was available, quick to respond, and very proactive with her advisement. Her direction was valuable to the town government on how to quickly respond to sensitive social subjects in a time of crisis.
